Recent reports have shown a decline in new car sales. This has mostly been attributed to the steady increase in price for new cars. Used car sales have skyrocketed the past few years which leaves automakers struggling to sell new vehicles.
However, one automaker has developed a plan to entice buyers. Toyota announced that they will be delivering used cars to the dealer. "Customers have shown in recent years that a used Toyota is far more appealing than a new one," says Toyota's executive sales operator, "We want to cater to what our customers want, and recently that has been used Toyotas."
Toyota's new plan includes driving cars to dealers instead of delivering them by truck. "Each Toyota we sell will have at least 5 to 10 thousand miles on it. This helps lower the price for the consumer, and allows us, as a manufacturer, to quality control our product." Sources say that the car interiors will be pre-stained with dirt, coffee, boogers, or any other substance commonly used by the average first owner. "So far sales have shown favoritism toward the SE Camry coated in coffee with the 4Runner covered in Cheerios a close 2nd." Toyota also announced a partnership with Best Buy where nearly each model of new used car they sell will have the stock radio replaced with a much more confusing and low quality Rocketfish/Magnolia system that won't fit into the stock radio slot of the dashboard.
"Adding to the experience of used car buying that our clients seem to prefer are special CarFax cars," Toyota Director of Customer relations stated. "These CarFax cars are built from the factory and purposely run into a tree. Then they are rebuilt and delivered to the dealer lot. This way the customer can see the vibrant history of the car. It is all part of the experience that our customers want."
One of the prime concerns about this new strategy for consumers is the price savings. Toyota estimates that this program will knock close to $10,000 off the price of what a brand new car would be. However, since some aspects of pricing are controlled by the dealer, the real impacts are unknown. Toyota feels that by delivering used cars straight from the factory, more people will be able to afford quality Toyota products.
There is no word on if other automakers are joining this trend. Some sources claims that Rolls Royce is running a similar program where they are bringing in local poor people to touch the cars which depreciates their value by over 10 percent. I believe that more automakers will try delivering used cars straight from the factory if this move by Toyota is successful.
